Our school communities are in dire need of fresh ideas and strong leadership. They continue to struggle with low EQAO scores, increased violence, language barriers, lack of community spaces, increased mental health issues, and low parent engagement and more. If elected, I will:
No student should get left behind due to a different learning style, a language barrier, or a lack of technology. No student should be left behind because of any racial, gender or cultural barriers. I will fight for equitable access to education for all students, so that they can reach their full potential.
"Communication leads to understanding, shared values, and community." Often times, it's those genuine interactions between people or an inspiring sermon at mass that lifts us, strengthens our spirit and allow us to understand what we need to do to help ourselves and our children. I will use my passion for people and my ability to connect with others, to strengthen partnerships between parents, educators and the church.
Bullying, cyber-bullying and harassment are still happening far too often in our schools. The reports of violence and aggression we hear about in our schools, frustrate and frighten us all. As your trustee, I will work tirelessly, to ensure each school has a safe and inclusive learning environment, where everyone feels respected and valued.
Anxiety, ADHD, depression, bulimia, addiction... today’s hectic world has our children dealing with a host of challenges. As your trustee, be assured; you will have a powerful voice fighting for funding and skilled resources to ensure all our children have the best education possible.
I will listen to your concerns and respond to them. The voices of concerned parents and caring community partners need to be heard. I will be that strong voice at the board - that champion for what we need in our community and in our schools. Our families deserve nothing less. Our future depends on it.
The 2016/17 EQAO results showed a continuing downtrend in our math scores. Math, in addition to reading, are fundamental skills which open doors to higher education, employment, entrepreneurship and other opportunities.. For our students to succeed, we need to address some of the barriers that exists in math and reading literacy.
Higher education shouldn’t be a goal too far out of reach for our students. They should see it as a real possibility; one that will unlock a world of potential for them. As your trustee, I will encourage students to explore the different pathways to higher education and help families seek out the resources necessary to make this happen.
Parents want to be supportive and help their children succeed in our education system. What they need is a trustee that will help them navigate through the wide range of resources available and understand which one’s suit their needs best. I am that trustee.
The phrase, "No person is an island" by English Poet John Donne expresses the idea that people don't do as well when isolated from others and need to be part of a community to thrive and grow. As a mother who cares about the community and knows the importance of positive role models, I will create inter-generational, cross-community, Catholic-based programs and mentorship initiatives to foster healthier relationships throughout the community.
No air conditioning, broken toilets, drafty windows and leaky pipes. We've all heard countless stories of disrepair in our schools. I will fight to get our schools the badly needed funds to address these issues to create a safer, well-maintained school for our children.
